Lores Bonney

7 April...a big day for Lores Bonney.

On 7 April 1917, 19 year old Maude Rose Rubens married Harry Barrington Bonney, in St Philip’s Church, Sydney.

On 7 April 1930, Maude (now known as Lores) and Harry Bonney booked seats an anniversary on the Australian National Airways’ Brisbane–Sydney flight.

The flight was 5 or 6 hours long and guests were provided with a picnic lunch (complete with thermos.

On 7 April 1933, Lores was three days from embarking on her solo flight from Australia to England in her Gypsy Moth ‘My Little Ship’. That day, the staff of Bonney and Clark Pty Ltd, her husband’s company, gave her a Good Luck plaque to fit to her aeroplane for the flight to England. ‘I am not afraid to fly anywhere’ she told them, ‘but I get terribly scared when I have to make a speech’. Later that day she hosted an anniversary/farewell cocktail party for 40 guests.
